Dolcetto is one of the most typical and widespread vines of Piedmont. It owes its name perhaps to the sweetness of ripe grapes, or according to another theory to the Piedmontese term dosset, that is, a hill not particularly high. The wine produced with Dolcetto grapes has for centuries been one of the protagonists of Piedmontese peasant life and one of the main objects of exchange with Liguria, from which, besides oil and salt, anchovies were imported, the main ingredient of one of the most famous typical dishes of Piedmont, the bagna caoda. Dolcetto d'Alba wine obtained the DOC in 1974.
wine description
Elio Altare's Dolcetto d'Alba is a classic red from the Langhe, produced from grapes from the vineyards cultivated in La Morra, an area highly suited and famous for its balanced and highly refined wines. The choice to carry out the entire winemaking process using only steel means that the fruity notes typical of this autochthonous Piedmontese variety, cultivated for centuries in the Alba area, stand out. With its ease of drinking and pleasant expressive readiness, Dolcetto represents the daily wine in its best sense. Dolcetto grapes are fermented with maceration on the skins for 2 or 3 days in rotofermenters at controlled temperature. The wine ages for 10 months in steel tanks before being put on sale.
