The Côte de Beaune begins with the "Montagne de Corton". History or myth, this hill once belonged to Charlemagne, hence the name. The locality "Le Charlemagne" is the historical nucleus of the appellation. Located just below the Corton wood, it gave its name to the entire hill, whose altitude varies from 250 to 360 meters.
The name Corton derives from the Gallo-Roman period in which a rural domain called Curtis was perpetuated by the Franks and later by the monks of Cîteaux. There are various stories about the etymology of the name of the climat, which means "The foxes". Some imply that the voluptuous scents in climat wines were the inspiration. However, the animal character of his wines is the most likely explanation.
The Corton Les Renandes Grand Cru of the Maison Camille Giroud comes from vineyards, located near the locality of Aloxe-Corton on top of Monte Corton. Facing south-east, at an altitude of 280-320 meters, they are planted in a brown calcareous soil, derived from altered limestone of Ladoix, crushed into 2 cm thick flakes, previously used as so-called typical "lava" tiles of the roofs of Burgundy.
The 2018 harvest surprised both for its abundant quantity and for its exceptional quality. Winter 2017-18 was moderately cold with temperatures sometimes below freezing in the morning but rapidly positive in the afternoon. These cool temperatures are accompanied by high humidity that regularly covers the vines with a beautiful white coat. March is also a bit cold while in the first days of April the temperatures rise. Development is rapid and rainfall is abundant in May and especially in June. At the beginning of June, flowering occurs rapidly in drought conditions very favorable to the development of the bunches. The aquifers are at their maximum and the heat of the day does not allow the humidity to settle, which allows the grapes to develop in exceptionally favorable conditions. At the end of June it is already very hot and the temperatures between 26 June and the end of August will very often be well above the seasonal norms with highs exceeding 30 ° almost daily, interrupted only by a good rain on the 13 August arriving. to refresh the grounds.
