Climate

The first quarter of 2019 brought drought: only 144.20 mm of rain. And depending on the sector, the rainfall deficit was more or less important. The amount of sunshine was very generous in these first 3 months, also exceptional in February, with an excess of over 40%. A peak in winter temperatures is also observed in the second decade with record values of 20 ° C from 25 to 28 February. This month of February 2019 will enter the annals as one of the sunniest. The extreme mildness that reigns at the beginning of the year already suggests an early awakening. From March spring and cool days alternate. The water heterogeneity of the plots leads to uneven growth from one village to another and from one vine to another. At the beginning of April the cold returned and during the night of April 5 the temperature drops to -3 ° C. The damage is difficult to assess at this stage as the growth is heterogeneous, but will be visible later. On the 7th of April the green peak stage is reached and the first leaves appear while on the 12th the vegetative development slows down. Also in this case, on April 14 the risk of frost is announced and to avoid this paraffin candles are lit to heat the air on the ground, straw fires to create a smokescreen to prevent the first rays of the sun from burning the young shoots. In the end, the damage was very limited. Despite the mildness at the end of April, the vegetation struggled to develop. The low temperatures in May and the lack of rain slowed development. June finally arrives with high temperatures, 32 ° C in the vineyard on June 5th. The leaves are turning green again, the sprout is accelerating, the flowering is in place on 12 June, but the mornings remain cool, 8 ° C on the 13th. Some rains are welcome in mid-June and flowering ends slowly. From June 18th to July 9th the heat wave arrives, 43 ° C in the vineyard on June 27th! At this stage it is impossible to consider counting the 100 days to evaluate a harvest date! between 12 and 26 July a considerable increase in temperatures hit the vines, drying the land and if the rains had not arrived on 27 and 28 July the grapes would have been definitely damaged. August offers sun and rain, veraison takes place from 12 to 22 August. The grapes are rich in sugars, photosynthesis is efficient, the wind concentrates acidity. September is hot. The maturity checks confirm our observations: perfect health conditions, excellent phenolic maturity, acidities hold up well, a magnificent vintage is looming!
